With this I shield my breast…
‘In the chest of a woman is not only an extension of breast and a feeble heart but a flaming desire to possess and use power.’- Efo Kodjo Mawugbe.
The battle of the sexes has long been fought for more than centuries. Different eras of human history show powerful women who in the midst of men fought to make their voices heard. Even here in Ghana we are told the tale of the brave Yaa Asantewaa who led her people in battle. Although there are quite a number of powerful women in our day, the number could increase by far. This can happen if girls of today are taught their true worth at an early age.
In our world today, especially in Africa, girls have been programmed to believe that their highest qualification in life is to become a wife. Sure we do not prevent them from going to school and lock them up in the kitchen as in the days of old, but even as girls are encouraged to get an education they are only encouraged not to go so far or else what time will they have to marry and care for their families.
Women have been constantly informed and reminded by the so called sages that if they becoming more successful than men they will intimidate the other gender and they will find it difficult to get married. It is 2019 and way past time for a little reeducation. Let’s wake up. A successful woman is not a threat, she rather increases in value. To be very honest, the way this economy is going who wants to marry a woman who is going to add to his burden when he can have someone support him financially and reduce his stress instead. Think about it.
Sidney Sheldon, a famous novelist wrote, " if u are beautiful, have a brain and own a vagina, you can own the world." The problem nowadays is a number of ladies are using the latter organ more than the former. Instead of working hard and pushing through the boundaries by putting the totality of their brain power, we find young women succumbing to the difficulties of society and hiding behind a wall of excuses and choose to spread their legs instead because that seems easier. If only women were made aware of the true power that lies in them they could snatch this country out of the big men in dark suits and turn things around.
From her black kinky hair down to her melanin concealed feet, strength and tenacity flow through her body. The blood in her veins is mixed with undeniable power that travels all over her being. Her brown breast, a symbol of femininity stands firm and guards her brave and precious heart. Her brown toned legs filled with capacity to outrun every ancient thought of oppression, lead upwards to her lady parts. An organ so powerful it has the capacity to harness the force of life itself and bring forth another being into the world. She is beautiful, powerful, a force to reckon with, a game changer, stronger than she can ever imagine. She is a black woman.
Oh and don’t forget its breast cancer awareness month. Get checked and spread the word. Remember, early detection can save a life.
